Central Boys ‘B,’ led by a goal in the 47th minute by Nyron Alcides defeated North Savannah when play continued in the 11th Heritage Month Football Competition at the St Ignatius Football Ground Rupununi, Saturday last.
In the second game played on Saturday, Central Girls defeated North Savannahs 2 nil; the scorers being Jannissa Earnest in the 25th minute and Kathleen Simon in the 35th. Central Girls returned on Sunday and defeated East Central 3-1 on penalties after the game ended in a stalemate and extra time yielded no result, necessitating a penalty shootout.
For their efforts Central Girls received $40,000 compliments of businessman Daniel Gajie.
On Sunday also, Central ‘A’ dished out a 4 – nil drubbing on East Central and walked away with the $75, 000 put up by the Ministry of Youth Sport and Culture. Anthony Parks stitched in the first goal for the winners. Igor Young emulated his teammate with a double in the 12th and 60th minutes.
However, his celebration was short-lived as he was issued a red card by referee Earl Grimond shortly afterwards for breaching the rules. Elton Phillips took up the slack for Grimond and netted the 4th goal to put an end to the onslaught.
At the end of the match Dexter Mentore received the Best Male Goalkeeper award, while Leonie Robinson was adjudged best female goalkeeper.
The most valuable female player was Phyllis Lorentino while Lorenzo Sampson won a similar award for the males.
