Responding quickly, the Guyana Fire Service contained a noonday fire at Hague, but was unable to save the structure. The house, at Lot 7 Hague Front, West Coast Demerara, was destroyed but members of the Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading to the neighbouring houses.
The blaze began at approximately 12:45 hours. No one was injured in the fire.
While the origin of the fire is unknown, persons living in the area have said that they believe that the fire started from a burning rubbish heap in the yard. One of the residents said that rubbish is often burnt in that yard.
The eastern wall of one of the neighbouring houses sustained substantial damage due to the heat the fire generated. There was also significant water damage to some of the things in the upper flat of the same house.
Public-spirited citizens rushed to help the residents of the neighbouring house move their belongings out of the way, and managed to save a number of things from water damage.
Speaking with Kaieteur News, one of the ranks of the Fire Service said that she was travelling in a minibus when she saw the blaze. Getting out of the minibus she called the Leonora Fire Station and made a report. However, a report had already been made and the Fire Service had already dispatched tenders to the area.
The house that was destroyed was unoccupied, but there is a man who frequented the premises. He was not there at the time of the fire.
That man is “all around de place”, explained one resident, who was quick to highlight that fact that the man does not live there. The homeowners are overseas and have not been back to Guyana in a number of years.
