Several experts in the field of archiving are scheduled to arrive in Guyana from Cuba in the near future to enhance and preserve the National Archives.
During an interview, Cuban Ambassador to Guyana, Pedro Arteaga Cardenas, said that this is one way, outside of the health sector, that Cuba has been able to provide assistance to Guyana.
According to Amabssador Arteaga, a Cuban archivist was in Guyana earlier this year and she provided a complete report stating what would be required to update Guyana’s system. The new building located along Homestretch Avenue to house the National Archives was completed earlier this year.
The construction of the new building to house the National Archives was an initiative under the purview of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. The archives were formerly housed in a building on Main Street.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, told this newspaper that under the agreement which was signed by President Bharrat Jagdeo and then Cuban President Fidel Castro in 2006, Guyana had requested assistance in the area of archiving.
As a result, an expert came to Guyana several months ago and did an appraisal. According to him, dates have not been set as yet for when the other experts who hold various areas of expertise required will arrive in Guyana.
Dr. Anthony added that they are putting new systems in place to make the facility compliant with international standards. One expert, he added, will be looking at digitalization. Minister Anthony also noted that the new building is functioning well.
