– home fans ‘break up’ final at NOC ground
The ‘Bar-B-Q Man’ 20/20 cricket competition organised by the South Essequibo Cricket Committee ended in controversy in fading light at the NOC in South Essequibo on Sunday as home supporters invaded the field with South needing 28 to win from the final over.
The match was awarded to Central Essequibo who collected a trophy, $15,000 and a Ram Sheep while South took home the runner-up Trophy and $10,000.
Travis Simon and National under-17 selectee Herrell Greene both scored 15 as Central reached 98-8 in a game reduced to 11 over per side due to time constraints.
Patrick Rooplall grabbed 4-15 for South who reached 67-4 off 10 overs with Geewan Singh making 27 and Norman Fredericks 17 before the premature end to the contest.
In the semi-finals, Central beat Wakanaam by 36 runs with former Essequibo Captain Denish Joseph leading the way with 68. Balchand Shivamber supported with 36 as Central made 140-3 off their 11 overs.
Essequibo Inter County batsman Navashal Pooran top scored with 34 but only Roopnarine Persaud (31) and Neil Romalho 23 offered support as Wakanaam could only reach 104-6 when their overs expired with Kolraj Persaud and Joseph taking two wickets each for the winners. In the other semi-final, South got past North by six wickets after making 109-4 in reply to North’s 107-6 off their allotted 11 overs.
Laxmikant Narine made 46 and Suraj Sookdeo 22 as Norman Fredericks grabbed 3-18 for South while Floyd Henry made 58 and Rooplall 22 in a winning effort as Punraj Singh had 3-27.
Joseph took the best batsmen award and Rooplall received the best bowler award while Henry also a received an award for hitting the biggest six in the competition.
