The ‘Staff Party’ for local basketball players or what is more familiarly referred to as the Nestle Supligen All-Star Weekend was officially launched yesterday, at Beepat’s Head Office on Regent Street.
Members of the Head Table that conducted yesterday’s Wildfire Productions 6th All Star Weekend Launching include (from left) Vijay Panday, Alicia Braithwaite, Jermaine Softley and Warren Williams.
The 6th Annual event will be played on the weekend of October 25-26 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and according to representatives of the Wildfire Productions team; all of the usual activities that typify the competition will once again be showcased.
In attendance at the Meeting were Wildfire Productions Representatives Jermaine Softley, Vijay Panday and Warren Williams, while Alicia Braithwaite acted on behalf of main sponsor, Nestle Supligen.
Softley in opening remarks extended thanks to Nestle Supligen for their continued support which he disclosed begun from the initial stages of the event. He also expressed sympathy to the family, friends, team-mates and the entire basketball fraternity on behalf of Wildfire Productions.
Braithwaite in brief comments stated how happy they were to be on board once again and wished the Organisers much success.
Panday, who had the task of providing the details leading up to the weekend’s activities informed the media that teams to contest the All Star game will be selected very shortly and training will commence immediately after.
“I received information that Linden will select a provisional squad sometime this weekend and commence training shortly as they also prepare to host their All Star Tournament on October 18 following which the final composition will be released, while I expect Georgetown to name their squad very soon,” Panday said.
“We had written the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) even before the new executives were elected, but to date no reply on the current status of the team has been forthcoming even though the former did advise the new Body on how to proceed ,” Panday related.
He, however, indicated that they feel it is more a case of the incumbent merely through the settling in phase and expects to hear from them very soon.
“We have sent out correspondence to the GABA urging them to select the team, while a similar stance was taken for the clubs asking them to pick two players from both their junior and senior teams to participate in the dunk out and shootout segments.”
He did note that the deadline given to the GABA expired one week ago, but because of the extension, they are optimistic that the situation will be settled amicably.
Williams reporting on what is in store for the fans, pointed out that there will be the customary ‘Quick Bucks’ game where the ball is spotted at different locations and successful participants are awarded cash on the spot, while the mega half court shot for $100,000 is also scheduled to return.
Players are expected from Linden, Berbice and Kwakwani.
Up for grabs will be trophies, medals and cash incentives, while surprise entertainment will be a feature during the half time break.
Children under the age of 12 years are allowed to enter the arena free of charge.
