The Guyanese pair of Sven Kenrick Lorrimer and Adrian Spellen, despite spirited performances, failed to medal at the 16th Pan American Taekwondo Championships which concluded in Puerto Rico over the weekend.
According to the Guyana Taekwando Association, Lorrimer’s first match was against an opponent from Peru. He lost 5-2 but put up a good fight.
However, the Peruvian’s height advantage served him well and it was reported that Lorrimer made a few mistakes in the ring that ultimately cost him the match.
Spellen did slightly better and won his first match against his opponent from Honduras 7-0 (white wash) but in his second match against the Dominican Republic he lost 3-5.
It was reported that the Spaniard was also taller than Spellen and more skillful in his attacks. However, according to the GTA, it was a great battle between the two Middleweight fighters.
It is understood that Coach, Master Nate Robinson after seeing Lorrimer perform for the first time was very impressed with him and said the Guyanese has the heart and will-power to win the gold medal in the near future.
He added that with a little more training and guidance from his coaches he can eventually make Guyana proud at the highest level.
“The Guyana Taekwondo Association has full confidence in these athletes that hopefully the next time they will land the gold medals with great perseverance. Adrian’s Father Coach Bernard Spellen could not make it to the championships so Coach, Master Nate Robinson filled in for him,” GTA official Latoya Hubert told Kaieteur Sport.
