‘Ex-convict’ jailed for stealing compressor Dr Ramsahoye compressor for scrap

An Albouystown man was yesterday sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a simple larceny charge.
The accused, Carl Fraser, appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, pleaded guilty to stealing one compressor valued at $60,000, property of Dr Walter Ramsahoye, some time between Wednesday October 1 and Thursday October 2.
He told the court that he was removing empty bottles from a garbage bin in a compound at Light Street and North Road. He said given the fact that he sells scrap metal, he saw the article and thought it would be good for his trade so he picked up the item and was subsequently found with it.
“Your worship ah try everything in life and it fail me so ah decide to deal with scrap metal and I just pick up this thing fuh sell it hoping it would mek meh life li’l better,” Fraser told the court.
He further told the court that in the past he was into snatching people’s jewellery and robbing but after spending some time in prison he decided to change his life style. After explaining to the court his reason for taking the item, he begged the magistrate to be lenient with him since the item was recovered.
“Ah two months would be good your worship,” Fraser noted.
Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews told the court that the accused was not a first time offender and that on October 1 the virtual complainant secured his premises and left. However, the following day when he returned, he noticed the compressor which is used to control the air conditioning unit in a building gone.
Investigations led Dr Ramsahoye and the police to the accused and the item was indeed recovered.
