DEAR EDITOR,
Horace Stuart, in a letter to Kaieteur News, wonders how come all stakeholders in West Indies Cricket have gone quiet on the current issue between Digicel and Stanford.
How come Chetram Singh and his directors in Guyana have nothing to say, he asks. How come the CARICOM Heads of Government, who have a Cricket Committee, are now suddenly quiet?
Mr. Stuart acknowledges that he has been unable to completely understand the legal arguments and subtle differences in what Digicel and Stanford want.
But, as far as he is concerned, Digicel has made significant business investments in this region, and considerable investments in our communities. How come the support for Digicel?
How come there was not similar support when the same company bringing excitement into the region displaced Cable and Wireless as sponsors of West Indies Cricket, when C&W had given 17 years towards the development of the game in this region?
That was done in extremely questionable circumstances, and was, in fact, the subject for a commission of inquiry.
It is with the same promise of excitement that Digicel has entered the Guyana cellular market. We have not seen Mr. Stuart do a similar analysis of the local situation.
Instead, Mr. Stuart argues that “Digicel invested in West Indies Cricket when it made no sense to do so…that must count for something,” and argues that “Stanford has brought excitement and seems set on bringing more, but let us not trample on those who went before and made the sacrifice when it wasn’t popular.”
It is with the same promise of excitement that Digicel has come into Guyana. But we have not seen Mr. Stuart, in his previous letters to the press, reminding us that it was GT&T which came and invested in Guyana in the late 1980s, when others felt that it made no sense to do so, that we must be careful not to be too impressed with those who have brought excitement and seem set on bringing more, and that we must not trample on those who went before and made the sacrifice when it wasn’t popular. The situation is so similar. Mr. Stuart should stick with the principle.
