Fans in the Plaisance community and its environs could see some riveting action this Sunday as a planned triple header brings the curtains down on the village Inter-Block Football Competition, at the Community Centre ground, starting from 17:00 hrs.
In the feature game, the youthful Front Side led by Coach Paul James takes on the lively Goedverwagting unit in what is anticipated to be an exciting contest and this encounter will be preceded by two more games that should generate fierce rivalry among the combatants.
The first game is between a Georgetown All Stars combination versus Hearts of Oak of Berbice, while two city sides Santos and Western Tigers collide in what is being touted as a grudge match with bragging rights in the offing.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, with Parliamentary Secretary Steve Ninvalle being instrumental, organised event has produced some stimulating matches over the tournament’s duration and the final is expected to be no different.
Front Side reached the final with a comfortable 2-0 win over Scheme through goals from the skilful Jevon Gibson, who is certainly a very talented player and one not afraid to take on defenders, while James, a player with plenty experience gave them the lead in the contest.
On the other hand, Goedverwagting as they had done throughout the competition once again displayed fighting qualities, coming from behind to score in sudden death penalty shootout for their place in the final.
To their credit, they fought all the way after falling behind for 69 minutes when
Troy Charles gained the equaliser one minute before full time, before a miss by Troy Bunbury in sudden death kicks effectively took them out of contention after Devon Agard made good on his attempt.
These two players along with the dreadlocked Leon Lewis are the marquee players on the Goedverwagting side and the team’s chances of pulling off victory rest squarely on their shoulders.
In the veterans’ game, G/town All Stars should start as favourites and they’ve selected a star-studded team led by former national Captain Terrence Archer and include a host of former nationals as well.
Among those slated to appear are ‘Sir’ Anthony Stanton, a prolific striker in his heyday, Mortimer Stewart, Stanford Miller, Selwyn Bailey, Terrence Lewis, Nicky Thompson, Ronald Austin and Jolyon Lewis between the uprights.
Hearts of Oak line include Charles ‘Puggy’ Joseph, Tom Jones, Keith O’Jeer, Kurt Alphonso and Phillip Carrington.
The clash between relegated Western Tigers and Premier League side Santos also promises to be a bruising battle and an anticipated grudge.
Speaking with President of Western Tigers Gordon Gilhuys, he expressed confidence that his side is a far more superior one that their rivals and predicted victory.
“You all know the records; we are leading the Division One points standing and even though they are playing in the Premier League which is suppose to be a higher level, we will beat them easily,” Gilhuys said.
“There is only one team in Georgetown that can give us a fight and that is Alpha United and the record will also show that we defeated them in the Sweet 16 Competition,” he added.
Santos on the other hand has been struggling since gaining promotion to the Premiership and currently sits one place from the bottom of the table and could face relegation by the end of the season.
A team that is still in search of new players to fill the void created by the exodus of a number of their stars has not been able to produce the quality needed to handle teams at the higher tier.
But with cash incentive at stake, anything can happen and underestimating them could prove costly for the Tigers.
PS Ninvalle said, he was happy with the speedy response from Gilhuys at short notice to make the Tigers available for the contest.
Ninvalle noted that is shows that there are some sports administrators that are seriously interested in helping promote and propel the sport and kudos are in order for the head of the club and its members.
