Marques wins on opening night

Guyanese Alicia Marques scored a close victory over her Canadian opponent, while T&T’s boxers, Latoya Providence and Wendy Allen failed to get past the first round when the Pan American Women’s Boxing Championships got going on Friday at Chaguaramas Convention Centre in Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago.
Marques was the only fighter from the English-speaking Caribbean to advance to the next round when she recorded a 11-10 win over Canadian Katie Dunn in the 63Kg department.
Marques, who hails from the Port Kaituma area, was one of several fighters discovered by former boxer now trainer Mark Yaw.
She fought a bruising battle with the Canadian, with a mixture of aggression and defence, she managed to squeeze out the narrow victory in the end.
With fighters from the United States looking a cut above the opposition, Trinidad’s Providence was beaten by Puerto Rico’s Mercedes Alicea 14-4 in the 54kg division.
Allen came up against American, Quanitta Le Underwood in the 63kg category and trailed 3-13 at the end of the three rounds.
Although having an advantage in height and reach, Providence tried her best but was no match for Alicea, who showed good technique by keeping her distance and picking her punches.
In the first round, Providence danced and moved, giving Alicea little chance of scoring. However, in the next two rounds, the Puerto Rican came out for the kill and her battling qualities gave her the advantage.
Allen limited Underwood to just two points in the first round but was no match for her opponent in the next two rounds. After taking the lead 6-1 at the end of round two, the American piled on the pressure to score seven points to the Trinidadian’s one in the final round.
Underwood was one of three fighters from the US to win convincingly – the others being Cheryl Lyn Houlihan, who outscored Miaria Arcos of Ecuador 14-0, and Venessa Jackson, who dominated her fight against Ecuador’s Celinda Mejia before winning 17-2.
TT boxers were featured in four fights last evening with Jamila Jones and Chimere Taylor being matched against American opponents, Jody-Ann Weller and Meredith Giustina respectively.
Leeann Boodram was slated to meet St Lucia’s Karen Phillips while Elizabeth Burke was due to come up against Brazil’s Andrea Banderia.
Details of the other Guyanese have not been forthcoming to date.
