WINNERS ROW: Abigail McDonald (centre) flanked by Leon Belony (left) and James Krakowsky following the presentation of prizes.
Abigail McDonald returned from a self-imposed hiatus, defeated a star-studded line up of scrabble players and comfortably carted off the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) Open Championships when they held that tournament at the Courts Sports Club, Main Street, Sunday last.
McDonald also formed 10 bingos, the same number as Leon Belony but they were unable to uplift a special prize put up by Ulric Harris since they both failed to meet the stipulated amount.
The prerequisite of winning this prize was that the winner would have had to register a minimum of 12 bingos to have been in contention.
Despite losing out on this prize, McDonald registered a flawless 6 games and a positive spread of 747, while her closest opposition, Leon Belony, won 4 games with a positive spread of 401.
James Krakowsky also won 4 games but had to be content with the third podium spot with a smaller spread of 358. He registered 5 bingos.
McDonald stated her intentions from the onset when she thrashed Wakefield Skeete by a large spread of 191. She also registered two bingos in that game. Krakowsky was her next victim and even though the margin of defeat was reduced (163), he was not spared the onslaught. McDonald formed 2 bingos in that set.
She next faced National Champion, Fred Collins in the pre-lunch game and disposed of him by a huge spread of 222. She also added three more bingos to her tally and went off to lunch needing just five more bingos to cart off the Ulric Harris special prize.
While McDonald was destroying her opposition, Ruby Cummings was also enjoying a great tournament. At the lunch interval, she had amassed 3 flawless points with a spread of 353. Her victims were R. O. Michael (45), Ulric Harris (126) and Devon Dublin (152). The tournament was interestingly poised at this stage.
Cummings faded in the second half first to McDonald (13) and then Krakowsky in the fifth set. Leon Belony then closed off her chances for a podium place with a 23 spread defeat.
In the meantime McDonald continued her winning ways with victories over Leon Belony (61) and Paul Adams (97) in the remaining two sets to crown a successful day.
