Foul play ruled out in minibus driver’s death

An autopsy on the body of New Amsterdam minibus driver Ovid Austin showed no signs of poisoning, and indicated that he succumbed from a clot in his lungs.
But relatives are still calling on the police to investigate reports that Austin may have either deliberately or unknowingly ingested a poisonous substance.
Kaieteur News understands that the autopsy, performed yesterday, revealed that Austin, who was about 70, died from pulmonary embolism — a sudden blockage in a lung artery.
According to an official, the pathologist who conducted the autopsy found nothing to suggest that the victim had ingested a poisonous substance.
Ovid Austin, of Philadelphia Street, New Amsterdam, collapsed at his home on Thursday afternoon.
He died some hours later at the New Amsterdam Hospital. Austin’s relatives claim that they learned about his death only on the following day, after some of the driver’s associates saw them and expressed their condolences.
There have been conflicting reports about the elderly man’s demise, and some relatives suspect that he might have been the victim of foul play. According to one report, Austin collapsed after consuming a small amount of alcohol.
Austin’s relatives say that they were also told by a close female associate of the deceased that he had ingested a poisonous substance.
One of the relatives say they were told that Austin threw the bottle away, but that the bottle was later retrieved. The relative said that they provided the police with this information, but the report was not investigated.
Responding to this charge, a police official said that Austin’s relatives have been speaking to the media rather than to investigators.
