Food for the Poor (Guyana) Inc recently celebrated the 1000th mark in its ongoing housing drive, which over the years has benefited the poor, needy and underprivileged countrywide.
To date, the Food for the Poor (Guyana) Inc has spent in excess of US$3.5M of some $714M to construct these homes in Guyana.
Over the last 17 years, Food for the Poor (Guyana) Inc has been continuously renewing the hopes of thousands of persons seeking the assistance of the organization. There have been donations of food, clothing, educational, medical and farming supplies or shelter.
All of these activities are in keeping with the mandate of the organization, which is to help in the alleviation of poverty, regardless of race, status or creed. With this in mind, in April 2004, the entity decided to take its work further by embarking on its “housing project”. The houses provided are a standard wooden two-bedroom structure (inclusive of back and front steps). The buildings renew the faith and hope of the recipients, who in most cases are barely able to feed their families, and have little faith in actually having better living conditions.
Last month, the organization provided each of 1007 families around the country with a new home.
The total number of persons per household was no less than six, therefore an average of 6,042 persons are now able to say that they have their own homes.
The housing venture was started in South Sophia, and moved countrywide, touching every county.
The organization has also been helping people with health problems compounded by lack of proper nutrition, insanitary living conditions and the inability to afford even basic medicines. Over the years, this organization has been lending support to the Ministry of Health, through the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and other hospitals and medical institutions throughout the country.
On Wednesday last, the organization presented some $7.5M worth of medical supplies to the GPHC. The presentation was done in the boardroom of the Festival City-based organisation.
