The battle for the 2008 Cellink Premier League Championship continues to fluctuate following the latest round of action on Sunday evening at the Tucville Community ground.
In the feature match, dubbed the clash of the juices, Sunburst Camptown prevailed over Fruta Conquerors by a slim 1-0 margin, the game could have been decided by a wider margin were it not for some close shaves and missed chances.
Camptown though, looked the more composed of the two sides and controlled the game from midfield with Troy ‘Bugs’ Prescod taking charge.
The Fruta side’s slump in form continued against their arch rivals who were not at their best on the night but did enough to take full point’s which carries them to 24, the same as defending champions, Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United.
Consistent scorer Mervin Joseph did the honours for Camptown, a play which started just over the half way line in Fruta’s half from a throw in by Reshawn Sandiford to Prescod who got past two opposing players before laying the ball off to Joseph who finished clinically in the 28th minute. While no other goals were scored in the match, the battle was intense between the sides.
Conquerors remain on 15 points and fourth on the table with just two matches to play in the league against the struggling Santos and Alpha. They would be looking to take full points from these matches with a view of finishing in the top four, a task which is not impossible but tough.
The Guyana Defence Force, serious contenders for the top prize, continue to make that look easier when they dispatched the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) 3-0.
The Bourda Boys who finished as the runner up team in the division one which earned them their spot in the premier ranks, suffered their second consecutive loss and the loss of a player to red card in back to back games.
Chris Fernandes was given marching orders by referee Otis James for violent conduct five minuets before the end of the first half, sanctioned for elbowing an opposing player.
At that point GDF was 1-0 up compliments of a 38th minute goal from Dwight Peters. Five minuets after Fernandes’ expulsion and on the stroke of halftime the lead was doubled by a Gavin Wilson goal.
Sealing the deal for the Army, who has now taken pole position, was former Bakewell Topp XX player Marlon Benjamin, six minutes into the second half.
GFC made a few promising runs at the GDF but were not able to convert their chances into goals.
Like the inaugural Cellink league last year, it seems likely that this year’s champion will not be decided until almost the end of the championship with some tough assignments remaining for the top contenders.
Current points standings: GDF 27, Alpha 24, Camptown 24, Conquerors 15, GFC 14, Pele 13, Santos 6 and Uprising 3. The battle is set to continue on Friday evening with two more matches.
Camptown will be aiming to join the GDF at the top when they face Uprising from 18:00hrs with the feature match up bringing together Fruta Conquerors and Santos. On Sunday, Pele opposes GFC, while in the clash of the titans, GDF match skills with Alpha United.
