Forty-year-old former Demerara youth batsman Winston Semple continued his run-rampage with his second consecutive century for MSC in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) 30-overs Steve’s Jewellery over-40 cricket competition.
The right-handed Semple, the elder brother of former West Indies ODI batsman Keith Semple, followed up his magnificent 162 against GYO last weekend with an enterprising 109 as MSC beat Steve Jewellery at the GNIC ground by 48 runs to notch up their third win in the competition from as many matches.
The leading run-scorer in the competition and only centurion apart from GNIC’s Orin Hutson, Semple slammed 11 fours and five sixes and got support from former Guyana first class player Neil Barry who followed up his 87 in his last innings with an attacking 93 with nine fours and six sixes as MSC reached 253-4 in 24 overs.
R. Sookram (60) and G. Benjamin (57) gave Steve Jewellery a good start but once they were separated the run rate dipped although L. Pooran finished unbeaten on 30 as left-arm spinner Morris Julian continued his good form in the competition with the ball by claiming 3-34.
After beating the Rasta’s X1 in their opening match, MSC got past GYO by 112 runs at GYO as Semple clobbered 24 fours and four sixes in a murderous display as MSC amassed 286-5.
GYO were then restricted to 174-6 despite 37 from Roy Chandra and a defiant 32 from Khemraj Chanderpaul, the father of West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
Semple ended a good match by taking 2-4 with his off-spin for MSC who are expected to be strengthened with the inclusion of former national under-19 batsman Shawn Holder and former first division pacer Otis George for their next game. (Sean Devers)
