Former West Indies ‘A’ team left-hander Azeemul Haniff hit a commanding unbeaten 89 to spur GCC to a five-wicket victory against MSC while a solid 66 from National under-19 opener Trevon Griffith steered DCC to a two-wicket win against TSC as action continued in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Pepsi Cup first division 40-overs cricket competition yesterday.
At MSC, Haniff slammed eight fours and four sixes in his 80-ball undefeated knock and shared in an unfinished 106-run sixth wicket partnership with Yannick Grimes who made 31 not out as GCC reached 196-5 off 35.1 overs replying to MSC’s 192 all out in 37.4 overs.
In the MSC innings, twenty-five year-old Antonnel Atwell stroked eight fours in his attractive 43-ball 53 before he was run out in a mix-up with Randy Lindore who made 33 from 44 balls with three fours and a six.
Atwell, just back from England, and Lindore added 78 for the seventh wicket after Shemroy Barrington had made 29 from 47 balls with three fours and a six at the top of the order.
Guyana players Orin Forde (13), Steven Jacobs (16) and Deon Ferrier (9) all fell cheaply as former National under-19 pacer Trevor Henry (2-21) and former Guyana under-15 player Ravi Sarwan (2-29) took two wickets apiece for GCC.
Raymond Bacchus (18) and Sarwan (22) got starts at the top of the order for GCC as 16-year-old pacer Seon Daniels continued his good form by removing the first three GCC batsmen including West Indies players Leon Johnson (1) who like Ferrier in the MSC innings, seemed very unlucky to be given out leg before after ‘playing’ the ball.
Daniels, a member of the Guyana under-17 20-man squad preparing for the regional tournament in Trinidad in December, finished with 3-47.
At the DCC ground, DCC reached 200-8 from 38.4 overs replying to TSC’s 199-8 off their allotted 40 overs.
Tyrell Tull, a member of Guyana’s victorious 2006 Stanford 20/20 team, stroked a confident 56 before he was run out while Shane Cummings (36), Steven Alves (23) and Kevin Alphonso (23) supported for TSC as off-spinners Denis Squires (3-19), Kevin George (2-18) and Garvin Nedd (2-31) did the damage for the home team.
Griffith, who played in this year’s regional under-19 tournament in Barbados, gave DCC a good start with his half-century while Jamal Hinkson (32), National under-19 player Royston Alkins (25) and Matthew Marques (24) supported as leg-spinner Travis Blyden took 3-24 and former Guyana under-19 all-rounder and Demerara player Kelon Carmichael had 2-59 for TSC in a losing effort.
And on Saturday, GNIC remained unbeaten as they ended DCC’s unbeaten streak with a 13-run win at DCC.
Strengthened by the inclusion of West Indies opener Sewnarine Chattergoon, who made 32 and Guyana and Berbice opener Royston Crandon who scored 42, GNIC made 190-9 off 35 overs as Mark Monfort chipped in with 38.
George (33), Alkins (23) and National Keeper Derwin Christian (20) were among the runs for DCC as off-spinner Collis Butts, the son of former Test player and West Indies selector Clyde Butts, grabbed 3-33. Monfort and Garfield Newton took two wickets each to ensure GNIC won the match.
