– owner caught stealing construction material
A horse ended up in police custody yesterday after its owner was caught red-handed stealing construction material from a house lot in the Diamond New Scheme, East Bank Demerara.
The suspect and another man were loading several steel rods onto a horse cart when a security guard who watches over the premises, where a house is being constructed, confronted them.
One of the men managed to escape, but the horse cart owner and his animal were apprehended and taken to the Golden Grove Police Station.
Kaieteur News understands that the other man resides in Diamond Housing Scheme.
The owner of the horse alleges that the man had hired him to carry the material to another location.
Homes are being rapidly constructed in the relatively new scheme, and many owners have complained of having their building materials stolen.
The owner of the premises said that she, too, had suffered losses in the past, and was forced to hire a security guard after thieves broke into her bond and made off with an estimated $300,000 in tools, cement and other construction materials.
She explained that, at around 07:30 hrs yesterday, the guard left the premises for a short while.
When the guard returned, he observed two men brazenly loading his employer’s steel rods onto a horse cart.
The guard immediately ordered them to put the material back. The men complied, but one of them managed to slip away, leaving the horse cart owner and his animal to face the music.
The police eventually arrived and ordered the suspect to reload the steel rods onto the cart, since the material had to be tendered as evidence.
To prove they were not horsing around, the policemen escorted the man to the Golden Grove Police Station, where he was detained.
The horse was impounded in the compound.
