The Benschop Foundation, in its continued efforts towards development and empowerment throughout the country, yesterday presented the residents of Buxton, on the East Coast of Demerara, with a quantity of clothing and toys.

Mark Benschop, the entity’s founder, explained that the items which were distributed came from the Guyana Christian Charities (Canada) Incorporated, which had previously pledged to support developmental activities in the ‘economically depressed’ village.
Prior to distribution of the items, Benschop urged the residents of the community to remain united.
He specifically addressed the numerous children gathered, telling them to stay in school and study hard so that one day they would have the necessary knowledge, skills and education to make better lives for themselves.
Accompanying Benschop was the Mayor of Georgetown, Hamilton Green. In an invited comment, the mayor explained that he had joined Benschop on the trip to Buxton in his capacity as a good citizen who wanted to connect with the community and help it to grow and prosper.
According to Benschop, the reason he had invited Green was to provide visual proof to the Buxtonians that working in unity was of the utmost importance.
It was also made public that the Benschop Foundation would soon be starting a free computer course, which would teach persons the basics of how to use a computer. At present, the Foundation is seeking some 300 persons to participate in the course.
Added to this, Benschop said, in the near future, the Foundation would be accepting some 20 female single-parents to be part of the next cake decoration class. An additional 40 single-parent women would also be sought out to be trained as nail technicians.
These courses are being provided free of charge. “Empowering people is key to their own development,” explained Benschop, as he continued to say that, with these new skills, these single parents could go out and make something of themselves, and for their children.
