Neel Paramdeo Chanderedeo of Wakenaam finally got his scooter from the Demerara Tobacco Company. Early last month, he had gone to the tobacco company with the lid of a Pall Mall packet that indicated that he had won one of the 30 scooters that were up for grabs in the promotion.
He claimed that on September 9 last, he went to Suddie to visit a sick relative at the Suddie Hospital. He said that en route his wife went to the supermarket at the Suddie gas station to buy some articles, and she also bought a packet of Pall Mall cigarettes for him.
When he presented the lid of the packet to the tobacco company, the authorities sent him to Becks Auto to select a scooter, in keeping with his prize; but something was not right, so the company placed a hold on the presentation and asked that Chanderedeo return to the company.
The organizer of the promotion questioned him about the place of purchase, and that was when the problems began. The man claimed that he bought the cigarettes from a location at Parika, but the company knew that it did not send a batch of those cigarettes to Parika.
The man then claimed that he bought the cigarettes at his native Wakenaam. He changed his story once again when he claimed that his wife had bought the cigarettes.
The company was also wary that, instead of a packet, Chanderedeo only presented a lid, which, according to company officials, could have been a forgery since each packet has a bar code.
Further, the company, in an effort to stamp out the resale of single cigarettes, and having barred retailers from the promotion, began to examine whether some retailer had opened the packet, and having discovered the wining notice, opted to use someone to claim the prize.
On Friday, at the request of the tobacco company, Chanderedeo returned and volunteered to tell the truth about the purchase. He said that his wife did buy the cigarettes at Suddie, but a man named Salim tricked him into dishonesty.
He said that Salim told him that he could say that he bought the cigarettes at his place so that the tobacco company would send the scooter there, thus avoiding the need to travel to the city.
After telling the truth, Chanderedeo apologized for lying in the first instance. The company accepted the apology and, with the confusion out of the way, presented the man with his scooter.
The man said that he cannot ride a scooter, but he would not sell it, since the bike represented a gift.
Later in the day, he was seen at Parika with his scooter heading to Wakenaam.
