Merundoi Incorporated, in collaboration with the University of Guyana/Institute of Distance and Continuing Education (IDCE), will be conducting a Creative Writing for Dramatic Performances workshop from October 13-17. The project would be targeting young people 16 years and over.
The workshop is aimed at training young people in creative writing for dramatic performances to harness the creative energy which exists among them. This would in turn help build a capacity in Guyana for creative writing.
The course will be aimed at identifying the core group for potential writers, and help develop them as “script writers”.
It would also introduce the basic principles of dramatic writing and explore the differences between the different ranges of writing styles within the Caribbean.
Speaking with Kaieteur News on Friday, Ms Margaret Lawrence, coordinator for Merundoi, said that the main purpose of the project is to train persons in writing so that they can in many ways “rebuild the society”.
She further noted that persons who would be part of the project would be given the opportunity to showcase their talents in writing.
She continued that those persons who perform exceedingly well would be given a chance to write for the company (Merundoi).
Moreover, she said that participants would be exposed to writing styles from the Caribbean, Canada, Brazil and the United Kingdom.
Ms. Lawrence said that funding for the project would be provided through PEPFAR, CDC and IDCE. She further explained that participants must have some willingness and interest in the creative writing.
Kaieteur News, on Friday, contacted the project coordinator, Ms. Rebecca McCutcheon, also the theatre director for the project, who expressed joy at being a part of the undertaking.
She said that she strongly believes in the role of theatre in education and community work. She said that she hopes that this endeavour could tap into the huge undiscovered talents that exist in Guyana.
Ms. McCutcheon opined that the project would create technical skills to promote works in Guyana.
She further explained that students would be assessed on the successful completion of three pieces of work produced during the workshop.
Ms. McCutcheon further disclosed that the project would introduce, plan and execute group writing projects in social change-based theatre techniques, forum theatre and verbatim theatre.
