Kashif and Shanghai football action is set to make a grand return to Buxton later this year after a six year absence, as organizers have scheduled two matches for the Buxton Playfield.
This was decided following a recent meeting of high ranking officials of the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport and Kashif and Shanghai executives Kashif Muhammad and Aubrey ‘Shanghai’ Major.
Parliamentary Secretary in the ministry Steve Ninvalle confirmed that Buxton is now earmarked for a December 21 double header of the prestigious competition, following the meeting which was chaired by Minister Frank Anthony and included Permanent Secretary Keith Herman Booker and himself.
The return to Buxton is being made possible through collaboration between the Sports Ministry, Guyana Defence Force, Ministry of Works and the President’s Youth Choice Initiative.
Ninvalle explained that Dr. Anthony urged the organizers to revisit Buxton after laying out a plan to rebuild sections of the fence at the ground. “They (Kashif and Shanghai executives) needed little persuasion to decide on returning. I think that most people will be happy with this new development,” Ninvalle said yesterday.
The fence has been in a run down state for sometime and while at the Buxton Inter Block final in September Dr. Anthony had promised residents, headed by Lindon France, to intervene.
”Members of the Guyana Defence Force will work alongside some members of the community to get the fence fixed. The GDF will be providing the technical support,” Ninvalle declared.
The Parliamentary Secretary added that Presidential Advisor Odinga Lumumba, a native of Buxton, has put his weight behind the project and will be providing funds, through the President’s Youth Choice Initiative, for material to resurrect the fence while the estimate will be done by the Ministry of Works.
In an invited comment, Lumumba told Kaieteur Sport that when the event was first staged in the area, he was instrumental, encouraging the organisers the hold games there. Lumumba through the President’s Youth Choice Initiative had done refurbishing work at the venue at the then time, which prompted the invitation to host games there.
Lumumba said it great and good for the village. He pledged his full support for the activity. He noted that the return of the tournament will definitely lift the image of the village and make Guyanese and football fans in this case know that things have returned to normalcy there.
Buxton, which hosted Christmas Day quarter-final activity, was yanked from the Kashif and Shanghai list of venues in 2002 after parents of players expressed fear for their security when playing in the East Coast Demerara village following the 2002 jail break.
Since then large sections of the fence has been damaged. Ninvalle stated that an estimate is expected to be handed to Lumumba sometime this week with works scheduled to commence soon after.
The Kashif and Shanghai tournament has enjoyed a large turnout at the East Coast village during the time it was staged there and this year it is expected a mammoth crowd will descend on the Buxton ground to witness top class action and also herald the return of the tournament there. Kudos to the Sports Ministry and the players who have been instrumental in the tournament’s return to the East Coast.
