Anita Rahim, of 236 David Street, Kitty, is thanking the Good Lord for sparing her life after she discovered that the Kitty Health Centre had given her the wrong medication to treat her diabetes.
The 66-year-old woman, who is visually impaired, told Kaieteur News that she has been a regular visitor at the health centre for more than 40 years now, and this is the second time that the incident has happened to her.
She explained that she visited the facility two weeks ago to receive her 70-30 dose of insulin, which she uses to regularize her sugar level.
However, upon checking the medication on Friday, the woman’s eldest son discovered that the health centre had given his mother the 30-70 dose of the insulin instead.
The woman said that since she has been using the medication, she has found that she was constantly feeling sick and the fluid in her body would dry up very quickly; but due to her disability, she could not have read the medication.
Due to the mistake by the health centre, Rahim was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital on Friday night, where she received three injections and one bag of saline.
When her son took the medication back to the health centre, the pharmacist there told him that the institution did not have the correct type of insulin.
“I don’t know what to do about this, because this is health we are dealing with… and Minister Ramsammy always talks about health, and this here is very serious,” the woman said.
She noted that she spoke to Dr. Bheri Ramsaran about the issue on Friday and he assured her that he will look into the matter.
According to Rahim, she even called the Office of the President and they told her to make contact with the health authorities about her situation.
“They feel they can do this to people who would not talk, and a dead man carries no tales.
“I do talk… when things are wrong I say it…I’m not going to sit there and let them push nonsense to me… I mean they have to realize that there are people that can talk for themselves!” Rahim told Kaieteur News.
As a result of this, the woman said, she now has to use tablets as a substitute for the insulin, in order to normalise her sugar level.
Earlier in the year, the same health centre had given her the wrong type of insulin. After much run-around, the woman said, she was finally given the correct type.
Rahim is now calling on the relevant authorities to look into the situation with urgency, since her life is at risk.
Efforts by this newspaper to contact the Kitty Health Centre for a comment on the matter proved futile.
