Following the major issue of melamine unfolding in China, which has since claimed the lives of at least four persons and which has more than 53,000 hospitalized in that country, the Ministry of Health here in Guyana has found one product with melamine being sold on the domestic market.
The product, which is labelled as ‘Milky Evaporated Milk,’ is a product that is manufactured in China and one which has been identified as contaminated with melamine.
As such, the Health Ministry has issued a recall for the product from all those who have it in their possession.
In a press release, the ministry stated that the Food and Drug Analyst Department is engaged in an intensive search of the domestic market for the presence of milk and milk derived food products manufactured in China.
Kaieteur News understands that the contaminated product has so far not been seen in the large supermarkets, but was detected in a municipal market among small vendors.
According to the press release, the two importers are unregistered by the department and are currently assisting the Food and Drug Analyst Department in identifying the vendors to whom they sold it, so that it can be removed from the market, ensuring the safety of consumers.
So far, intelligence received by the Ministry of Health has found that the “Milky Evaporated Milk’ was imported through Suriname.
The department is calling on all consumers not to purchase or consume this product, and to report information on the sale of this product to the Analyst Food and Drug Department.
Wholesalers and retailers are requested to surrender to the Analyst Food and Drug Department any milk products containing milk-derived ingredients manufactured in China.
Health effects from exposure to melamine vary, depending on the amount and duration of exposure. Scientific research indicates that effects to the bladder and kidneys, such as bladder and kidney stones and chronic kidney inflammation, can be seen if exposed to high enough levels of melamine.
Since the revelation of the issue in China, the Ministry of Health, through the Food and Drug Department, has been carefully monitoring the situation, which according to them, has caused a global uproar and has resulted in several products being recalled by manufacturers and distributors, and also banning of products by several countries.
It was explained that melamine is an artificial chemical used in a variety of industrial applications, including the production of resins and foams, cleaning products, plastic products, fertilizers and pesticides. It is not naturally occurring, and it is not allowed in food.
However, melamine added to milk has the effect of causing milk to falsely appear to have more protein.
Melamine has great potential to affect the health of people and of animals. Its effects depend on the amount and duration of exposure.
