In wake of the recent wanted bulletins issued for three persons, Clayton Hutson, Frankie Ross and Joseph Aboud, some lawyers are questioning whether these persons’ character are not being tarnished.
Speaking to Kaieteur News several prominent lawyers have expressed their concern over the publishing of photographs and other biographic details of so-called wanted people.
In the recent case of warrants being issued for businessman Clayton Hutson and Joseph Aboud their lawyers are of the opinion that the publications have caused significant damage to their character.
“When these pictures are splashed on the front pages of all our daily newspaper and eventually on the internet this is bad for these business persons who have clients and more so their credibility as businessmen,” one lawyer said.
It was also stated by one of the lawyers watching one of the men’s interests that the police did in no way make an effort locate these men before issuing the bulletins.
What was even more surprising was the fact that only one of the men who turned himself over the police was released without posting bail. Hutson, who was released yesterday, was made to post $30,000 station bail.
“One would think with the bulletins issued and the reason stated by the police for issuing them, charges would have been laid against these men, or at least they would have been made to post substantial,” one lawyer noted.
Over recent times the Guyana Police Force has been issuing wanted bulletins for people in connection with various criminal offences.
However when these persons photographs have been published and they would have turned themselves in, they are often released without any charges instituted.
Following this they are left with a tarnished character which makes it hard for them to seek employment. In other cases it is bad for business.
A few months back wanted bulletins were issued for several persons whom the police said were wanted in connection with Lusignan massacre.
At least three of these persons made themselves available to the police and were subsequently released with no charges laid. These persons are now left to go back to society branded as criminals forever.
