The third annual Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer’s birthday 10K race and fun walk to be held tomorrow has once again attracted several top distance runners from across the region.
Elise Joseph, who is one of the organisers, said a star studded line up is expected which includes defending champion, St. Vincent & The Grenadines Pamenos Ballantyne.
Heading the Guyanese line up will be defending female champion Alika Morgan who is also a three-time CARIFTA Champion.
Cleveland Forde, just back from a scholarship in Kenya and Kelvin Johnson who has been doing well in the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago are also slated to compete.
Joseph said the event is a big one for them in Antigua. “It is actually a big event for us here in Antigua. It is actually the 60th birthday for the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Baldwin Spencer.”
There will be a 2K race for children under-13, a 5K for children under-15 with the big guns (male & female) battling in the 10K which is being dubbed the money race.
Other leading athletes from the Caribbean will be in the line up, St. Lucians Zephrinus Joseph (winner of the 1st race) and Jason Sayers.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Richard Jones, Curtis Cox, Christine Regis and Joel Barath. Leading the home country’s challenge will be Elliot Mason who placed fourth at last year’s event.
According to Joseph, October actually starts distance running in the Caribbean and the athletes look forward to the Antigua race which they use as a warm-up.
