DEAR EDITOR,
I would like to respond to a letter by Mr. Sase Shewnarain in the Tuesday September 30th 2008 edition of the Chronicle newspaper by simply stating that he is an apologist for NAMILCO.
In terms of Namilco being a monopoly, this still remains so, since Namilco is the only flour mill in Guyana.
As a flour mill with a parent company that has international linkages, Namilco is able to source cheap wheat from various parts of the world.
However, we in Guyana have not been benefiting from Namilco’s ability to access cheap wheat, thus the government subsidy.
I wish to implore the Government of Guyana to open the market so that we can have other flour mills operating in Guyana, and I am sure flour will be available to all Guyanese at a cheaper price, as is the case in many other countries.
Of recent the prices of wheat on the international market was significantly reduced, and once again we are hearing from Namilco that they have not been able to access the cheaper wheat, while the price of flour coming from Namilco remains high. Stop ripping off the Guyanese public, Namilco and Sase Shewnarain.
May I also remind Sase Shewnarain that Guyana has achieved remarkable progress in its efforts to open its economy through market-oriented reforms and improvements in the investment climate, while at the same time stabilizing inflation, and strengthening infrastructure.
Additionally, as an investor, the Government of Guyana provides an array of across-the-board investment incentives.
The figures stated by Mr. Sase Shewnarain are highly fictitious and as such I would like to suggest that he get his facts in order. I don’t believe that government wants to interfere with the free economy.
Government interventions were all in an effort to assist Guyanese so that they can feed their families.
Government is doing its best to cushion price increases so that Guyanese will not suffer.
If by trying to assist the poor, Government has committed a great wrong then I beg this government to continue to be offensive.
Mr. Shewnarain seems to find fault with everything this government does. His anti-government rhetoric only serves to expose his narrow partisan interest. Guyana belongs to all Guyanese, not a privileged few.
