A man has been sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to a simple larceny charge. The accused, 33-year-old Leon Persaud, made his appearance yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
It is alleged that, on September 30, he stole one mattress valued $10,000, property of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Persaud told the court that he lives at Cummings Lodge Squatting area and is employed by a coconut vendor at Bourda Market.
According to Persaud, he saw the mattress in the hospital compound in a garbage heap.
He added that he scaled the fence and was about to remove the mattress when the security guard came up to him.
Persaud told the court that he was severely beaten before he was handed over to the police. He, however, maintained that he never got the chance to remove the mattress.
Police prosecutor Sherwin Matthews told the court that Persaud was seen removing the mattress by a security guard attached to the hospital. The guard prevented Persaud from doing so, and arrested him. He was subsequently handed over to police ranks at the Alberttown Police Station.
Before imposing the custodial sentence, the magistrate told the accused that the offence carries a fine of $25,000 or an alternative of 18 months’ imprisonment.
However, Persaud asked the magistrate to be lenient, since he can’t afford the fine and has no one to assist him with the money.
The magistrate then sentenced Persaud to nine months’ imprisonment.
