Following complaints by residents of Chatteau’s Land, in Meten-Meer- Zorg, West Coast Demerara, that they have not been receiving any potable water for the past 15 years, the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has reported that the residents will receive water before the end of the year, if they submit their applications by the end of this month.
Speaking on the issue with Kaieteur News yesterday, Divisional Manager Aubrey Roberts said that, so far, only two residents from the area have submitted their applications to the water company.
He noted that if all the residents make their applications to GWI as early as possible, then the company will immediately move to lay water lines in the community. It will take the water company only two months to complete the exercise in the community.
Roberts explained that the area was an unregulated one that recently became organized and, as such, the community was not part of the GWI system.
However, he said that he, along with a technical team, visited the area last week and advised the residents that they needed to make an application to GWI.
Residents recently told Kaieteur News that since they have been living in the area, neither water nor electricity has been made accessible to them.
Residents noted that numerous representations have been made to the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) and the Guyana Power and Light Company (GPL), but these proved futile as, according to the residents, “the entities don’t seem to care about our well-being.”
As it relates to the water situation, villagers said, they have to resort to using water from the trench which is only a short distance away from the community. That water is unsafe for consumption and can only be used for doing laundry.
This, residents said, is really frustrating and is severely affecting them, as they find it difficult to find ‘clean and safe’ water for drinking and cooking.
Meanwhile, it was noted that villagers in the neighbouring community of Ocean Garden are receiving a full supply of water and electricity, and as such, residents in Chatteau’s Land would have to ‘beg’ them for water.
The residents said that the villagers in the neighbouring community would sometimes be hostile in the face of their request for water because, as it was explained, they are ‘fed up’ of the begging.
