DEAR EDITOR,
Those who help to make the Marian Academy a reality must be commended. As Bishop Francis said recently “Look what we have done!” After 10 years the Marian Academy has proved a point.
And I would add a point that was proven by the Mercy Hospital years ago, before it was reduced to its present state. However, much more needs to be done. Let us scan the horizon and try to be more specific.
(1)The Revival of the Catholic Teachers’ Association to help in raising the level of Education in the Country.
(2)The Sacred Heart Church which was destroyed 31/2 years ago is yet to be rebuilt.
It is common knowledge that under different circumstances the rebuilding would have been done a long time ago.
(3) The Mercy Hospital, which has been in decline with respect to its former status, has now made certain changes that augur well – namely a change in the composition of the Board of Directors, a change that was proposed eight years ago by the Sage Group, but was ignored. In a nutshell, the Mercy Hospital is now under new direction and with appropriate management it can now achieve a certain degree of its former status.
(4)In a society filled as it is with error, confusion, we cannot simply go along with the crowd. We must speak out against injustice wherever we find it. We must be seen to be championing the cause of the poor and oppressed.
(5)The Restructuring of the Diocese seems to be in a real mess. Today parishioners are forced to accept a service with a lay person officiating and if a confession is needed and no telephone is available to make an appointment, you will have to keep trying and trying or do without confession.
The shortage of priests is at the root of all these problems. What efforts are being made to solicit the help of priests from overseas?
Rome, I think, spoke of (Donum Fidei) priests. Has any attempt ever been made to get such priests? I am told that priests from Nigeria, Philippines and India may be available.
(6)The Holy Father has designated this year to St. Paul. This is a call for a Pauline Year, dedicated to the Apostle of the Gentiles.
One quarter of the year has already gone and all we have had so far are one or two articles in the Catholic Standard on the subject. Is this the kind of celebration the Holy Father is for? Perhaps the Marion Academy can show us the way.
John Fredericks M.D.
