Legendary Guyanese cartoonist, Hawley Harris, succumbed yesterday after a battle with diabetes for several years.
Harris, the recipient of several awards over the years, including the Golden Arrowhead of Achievement for his contributions over the years, was employed during his illustrious career as a cartoonist at New Nation and Mirror, two political organs; Guyana Chronicle, Stabroek News and Kaieteur News.
Born on September 17, 1931, he produced the comic strips appearing in the local dailies. These included Little Sue, Betty and Joe, A Little Soap, and Edward Riley (Hound dog) among others. He also produced a wide range of editorial cartoons.
The cartoons were used by Harris to express his outlook of issues in society, be they political or topical.
Paul Harris, who has also taken up the profession of cartooning, said of his father that over the years his fonder memories of his dad were to sit and watch him create masterpieces that would leave many in awe. “I was fascinated by the array of skills that he exhibited.”
He noted that at the time he truly recognised and understood the talent that his father possessed. He was not that interested in the art form but was subsequently encouraged by his father.
Harris added that it was when he realized the skill that he had inherited from his father that he truly developed an interest for the art form.
“Whatever you do, do it to the best of your ability and once you know to yourself that you have given it your best then that is an achievement in itself,” he recalled his father saying.
Harris said that his father would have proffered not just a single person in any specific field but an overall philosophy in living life.
As it regards the many books put together and published by Harris over the years documenting his artwork, Paul (Harris) said that he was sure that his father would be pleased to see them find their way into the school art curriculum.
Harris leaves to mourn his five children Paul, Mark, Peter, Kim and Simon, and 13 grandchildren.
