DEAR EDITOR,
There is a noticeable increase in the efforts of some sections of society to demoralise and damage the credibility of and public confidence in the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
Some have come forward with spurious claims of being targeted for execution and having reservations about supplying the police with information pertaining to their ordeal as they claim to be mindful of police involvement in these activities.
It is noticed, however, that these claims on most instances are either devoid of logics, unsupported by anything of a factual and tangible nature, or all of the above.
And can only be viewed as yet another attempt to damage public confidence in the security forces in light of their recent success in the killing of Guyana’s two most wanted and the dismantling of their gang, much to the annoyance of this particular section of society.
Even though they may be well aware that their claims are false, the fact that it is being relayed in public enables it to be readily consumed by those with an appetite for stories of such a nature and the damage to the image of the Force thus becomes irreparable.
It is also obvious that in an effort to “make the country ungovernable”, it is imperative that the security forces are under one’s control or subjugated if they are perceived to be acting in contrast to the objectives of the destabilisers.
In this funny society that we live in, it is quite acceptable for me to allege that the cell phone of my murdered son is in use after his death, yet I will not supply the police with the number of the cell phone so as to facilitate an investigation.
It is also acceptable for me to allege that my home was visited by strange men, whom I presume to be “phantoms”, yet my claims cannot be verified.
Not even my neighbours can attest to ever hearing my shouts for “help”, and at the same time refuse to give a statement to the police.
In Guyana, an act of such a nature usually affords one the opportunity of having celebrity status via immense coverage by the opposition media.
It enables you to become the author of a three or four page booklet destined for Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, and also gives you the opportunity of being politically prostituted by the opposition, much to the liking of some.
In the midst of all this, the security forces will lose a viable asset in their efforts at combating spiralling criminality, i.e. public confidence.
And another band of “freedom fighters” will emerge seeking to permeate fear on a section of the society, whilst some are silently supportive of their actions and publicly deploring the Government for, according to them, being unable to come up with a comprehensive security plan.
