Yana-Marisa Edwards is top student
The Ministry of Education has re-examined the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) results and has since found that it had made a mistake in choosing the top student for the country.
On Wednesday, the Ministry on review found that16-year-old Yana-Marisa Edwards, of Fourth Street, Campbellville, would have secured 15 Grade One passes since one of her subjects was a double award. Further, her core subjects were Science and her other passes were in mainstream academic subjects.
In August, the Ministry had credited her with 14 Grade Ones and a Grade Two.
When the results were released in August, the Ministry had announced that 16-year-old Rahul Neehal Lall, of Anna Regina Multilateral School, was the top student by virtue of his 14 Grade One and two Grade Two passes.
Yesterday at her school, Queen’s College, where she is now pursuing her ‘A’ Levels, Edwards said that she was informed on Wednesday that she is now the country’s top student.
She said that her mother, Appellate Judge Yonette Cummings-Edwards, got the news from the Ministry of Education.
The young Edwards told Kaieteur News that when she received the news, she felt no different, as she was always happy with what she achieved.
“I thought that I worked hard…I did well and I was happy with that. I mean this is icing on the cake, but for the most part, the cake was good.”
The teen will be pursuing her career in medicine. Today she should be receiving her award when the Education Ministry hosts its annual award ceremony.
