Chronic car thief put away for two years

Anil Nagaloo, 24, of 64 James Street, Albouystown, was yesterday jailed for two years when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate, Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, charged with stealing a motor car.

It alleged that the accused, on September 28, stole the car which was valued at $2.1M from Carlton Lee.
When the charge was read to him he pleaded guilty and offered an explanation for his action.

Nagaloo explained that he “just went for a drive” to take home his girlfriend and while he knew that taking the car was “wrong”, he just wanted to have some fun.

Lee said that this was not the first time that Nagaloo had done something of this nature. The man said that this time around the car was banged up and repairs cost $ 200,000.

He further told the court that on the day in question, he and the defendant went to a wake and they had returned home. He said that the defendant was about to park the car in the yard, when he suddenly drove away.

Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews told the court that on September 28, at about 22:30 hours, Lee and the defendant went to the East Coast Demerara. Upon returning, the defendant was about to park the car, when the latter suddenly drove away.

The prosecutor further explained that on September 29, the defendant was seen with the said car on Cornhill Street. He was subsequently arrested and told of the present offence. Matthews told the court that the car is lodged at the Brickdam Police Station.

Also appearing before the said Magistrate was Oliver Ignatius, 21, of 147 Garnett Street, Newtown. It is alleged that on September 30, he stole one laptop computer from Charles David Watson. The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was represented by attorney-at-law Patrice Henry who told the court that his client is a student of the Critchlow Labour College, with an unblemished record.

The lawyer, in a bail application, asked that bail be granted at a reasonable sum. Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews told the court that the accused had the computer in his possession at the time of the arrest.
