The Guyana Defence Force on Friday last awarded 28 bursaries to children during its 2008 Bursary Awards ceremony at Base Camp Ayanganna.
Each of the Awardees will receive a sum of $25,000 over the next five years of their secondary schooling, making the 2008 bursaries worth some $3.5M.
Bursaries are awarded annually to the children of serving and deceased members of the Force based on their success at the Secondary Schools Entrance Examination.
Colonel Mark Phillips, who addressed the awardees, said that the GDF was happy to be making the contribution to the development of the 28 “young and promising students”.
He congratulated the awardees and their parents for the successes achieved, noting that not so long ago, as a parent, he also had the task of ensuring that his children were well prepared for the examination.
Colonel Philips also noted that the parents and students would have made many sacrifices to achieve the positive results.
He urged the awardees to continue the pursuit of a good education. “Stay in school. Get a sound education to be successful in the world today…Education is the key…Education is your path to real freedom.”
The GDF in a statement to the media said that the organization viewed the annual awards of bursaries as a direct contribution to the development of Guyana’s human resources and a means of encouragement for the children of other soldiers to emulate the successes of their peers.
Ryan Reynolds, Keval Harlequin and Belinda Bess received prizes for being the most outstanding performers.
Ever since the GDF began awarding bursaries in 1974, the number of awardees has grown from five to 28 this year.
In addition, the amount awarded to the students has also been increased from the $10,000 awarded last year; the amount this year has jumped by 150 per cent to $25,000.
The bursary awards are meant to assist the students throughout their secondary education and the number of awardees this year brings the total bursaries awarded by the Army to 614.
