Carey Rogers, 20, of 211 Guyhoc Park, was yesterday remanded to prison, after he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with robbery.
On September 29, last, Rogers allegedly robbed Khemraj Bhagwandan, of a car valued at $1.7M and other items. The man pleaded not guilty.
He is being represented by attorney-at-law Mark Waldron, who in a bid to secure bail for his client told the court that Bhagwandan identified someone other than his client.
The lawyer further explained to the court that his client works at a car wash and the day in question the “real thief” came to get the car washed. It was while Rogers was washing the car that the police came and arrested him.
However, the prosecution refuted this claim. Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews told the court that the explanation was a figment of the lawyer’s imagination.
The prosecutor said that Bhagwandan positively identified Rogers, who is expected to make his next court appearance on October 10.
And Troy Barclay, 38, of 32 Albouys Street, Albouystown, was also remanded to prison by the Acting Chief Magistrate.
Also on September 29, Barclay allegedly had in his possession, 37 grams of cannabis sativa for the purpose of trafficking.
The accused told the court that he was released from prison 18 months ago after serving a 14-year sentence on a rape conviction. Having been released on parole, the man said that he was required to visit his probation officer each week.
He further explained that his community has “known drug dealers”, and that the drug dealers thought that he was “informing” on them, so on one occasion, these “known” persons attacked him with a gun, he said.
Barclay said that he went to the police and tried to make a report, but the police did not do anything because they were afraid of the “drug dealers”.
The accused said that on the day in question, the police came to his home to search for guns and ammunition. The search party claimed that it found cannabis.
The accused is represented by attorney-at-law Patrice Henry who, in a bid to secure bail, told the court that the circumstances in which the drugs were found are “circumstantial”.
However Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews told the court that the drugs were found in the defendant’s possession. The accused is to make his next court appearance on October 8.
