DEAR EDITOR,
Chumandat Persaud, please make me an exception in concluding that “Maureen Paul,” Former Head of THAG, has a vendetta against the Tourism Sector as your article reads, “Guyana’s Tourism Sector is now developing” dated September 23, 2008 via the Guyana Chronicle.
Guyana will definitely continue to be one of the most extraordinary Eco Tourism destination’s in this part of the globe.
I will forever continue my advocacy privately for this sector via tourism literature, but the fact remains that it’s getting even harder to convince potential visitors to head this way and the local issues which are very obvious to the eyes are contributing to cause of the ratings to continue sliding.
I have always maintained that image and transformation along with spending monies to make monies are vital components towards improvements and success. China is one good example from what I have seen during the 2008 Olympics.
Travel advisories on the other hand are major factors and I do respect the fact that agencies have got the right to protect their citizens from getting in harm’s way.
Not so long ago I read somewhere that a Canadian citizen was robbed and just recently a US Peace Corps Volunteer was attacked in the city and again, these are issues that will be considered for new advisories to be put in motion and current ones will continue to be extended.
Of course, I am not qualified to address security implementations, but I hope that foreign agencies will now review their security strategies for its personnel and I would suggest that they also network directly with all Tourism Agencies for further local security guidance.
Chumandat Persaud, I honestly don’t know, but it now leaves me to wonder from which part of the globe were thousands scrambling to get in Guyana during the just concluded regional festival.
Before I end, I would have only met with Maureen Paul on a couple of occasions in securing Tourism literature to have distributed.
