— as administration eyes options for new academic year
The administration of the University of Guyana is optimistic that the 2008 Convocation activities will be on stream for November as usual, despite the ongoing testing process at the Turkeyen campus to determine the air quality of the various buildings from which asbestos were removed.
An advertisement published in yesterday’s edition of Kaieteur News by the university’s Public Relations Department stated that the graduation exercises are usually time-tabled in the normal Academic Calendar to take place at the end of the second week in November.
It added that the graduands and the public will be advised in good time of any variation in the schedule caused by the institution’s late return to the campus.
Since July 1 last, the university was handed over to Government to facilitate the removal of asbestos from several buildings.
It was anticipated that the process would have been completed within two months. However, unforeseen delays which were attributed to the contractor have since caused the scheduled September opening of the campus to be postponed possibly to this month, according to the University’s Student Society (UGSS) President and member of the Asbestos Committee, Jason Benjamin.
Benjamin, in an invited comment yesterday, said that although plans have been streamlined by the university’s administration to have the convocation go on as planned, he divulged that there have been rumours circulating that the plans will have to be postponed, too.
The UGSS President noted, though, that should alternative plans become necessary, the Public Relations Department of the university will issue an appropriate advisory at least two weeks ahead of the scheduled convocation date.
In the meantime, Benjamin said that the delayed opening of the university is already having some impact on the new academic year.
He said that classes for the first year Law students have commenced since the programme entails a regional level examination.
At the moment, the other students of the Health Sciences Faculty are involved in medical practical sessions at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Benjamin said that plans will be streamlined to ensure that alternative arrangements are put in place for students of the other faculties should the opening be further delayed.
But according to the advertisement, activities have already commenced for the start of the academic year 2008/2009. One advertisement stated that the activities have been taking place in the temporary quarters at the Dennis Irvine Hall of Residence, Goedverwagting, and at other locations as announced from time to time.
However, it was noted that the full routine of registration, classes and all other matters will resume as soon as normal business returns to the Turkeyen campus, a date for which is not yet known.
The advertisement added that although the work on the buildings has been done, the university has to await the completion of exercises now in progress to sanitise the campus.
It was highlighted that the sanitisation process is of utmost importance because of concern for the health and safety of students, staff and visitors to the university grounds.
The advertisement further stated that as soon as the institution is assured that the air quality is satisfactory, the campus will be reoccupied.
At the moment, a temporary calendar of activities beginning mid-October has been drawn up and is expected to be publicised shortly, even as plans are on stream to announce the timetable as soon as the date for the return to the campus is confirmed.
