Nigel Thompson, 18, of 337 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, and Christopher Smith, 1,9 of 127 Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, were both placed on $100,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, yesterday, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
On September 28, being armed with an “ice- pick”, the two allegedly robbed Rakesh Kanaya and Bernadette Mangal of articles valued at $140,000 at about 03:00 hours on Sunday. The two pleaded not guilty to the charge.
According to Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews, both Mangal and Kanaya were at a Sheriff Street night spot. As they were exiting the club and heading to their vehicle that was parked across the road, Smith and Thompson approached them and relieved them of their valuables.
The two then made good their escape. However, the victims saw a police patrol in the area and made a report, giving the police full description of the defendants.
The prosecutor further noted that the two were subsequently apprehended and a search of their person led to the recovery of Mangal’s cellular phone in Thompson’s pocket.
However, this claim was denied by the defendants. Smith told the court that he had just left his child-mother’s home and was heading along Sheriff when he saw Thompson who asked him for a “car fare” to go home.
He said that he was never involved in any police matter before.
The other defendant, Thompson, said that he was in the club with his girlfriend. He said that as they were leaving they saw a cell phone near a car wheel. He said that his girlfriend prompted him to pick the phone up.
Both defendants are expected to make their next court appearance on October 14.
