Police have refuted suggestions that 34-year-old prisoner Anand Sukdeo, who succumbed last month, was the victim of foul play.
According to a source, the autopsy revealed that Sukdeo had an inflamed pancreas.
Cause of death, the autopsy report said, was acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis.
A source said that several factors, including excessive use of alcohol, could cause this condition.
Sukdeo died on September 23 at the Leonora Diagnostic Centre.
Kaieteur News was told that no marks of violence were present when the autopsy was done.
The man’s mother, Deowattie Sukdeo, had alleged that she had observed bruises on her son’s face when he was being laid to rest.
Anand Sukdeo, a father of four, of Parika Façade, East Bank Essequibo, was admitted to the facility for approximately a week before he died.
Sukdeo was reportedly remanded to prison after he was charged for damage to property, disorderly behaviour and the use of threatening language, after he and one of his relatives had a dispute.
His mother said that while her son was in the prison, he complained of feeling unwell and was taken to the hospital where he was given five bags of saline.
He returned to the prison but still felt unwell, and was again taken to the hospital, where the doctors related that they found nothing wrong with him.
However, when his case was called again at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, the woman said he was unable to climb the steps, and was complaining of headaches.
He was placed on $50,000 bail and was immediately admitted to the Leonora Diagnostic Centre, where he then became unconscious.
The man’s mother said that since September 15 her son had been on a life support machine and could not speak.
The family noted that they observed bruises on Sukdeo’s shoulders and face, while his head was swollen.
They noted that Sukdeo did not say how he came by the marks as he was unconscious most of the time.
His mother stated that her son’s body did not bear any of those marks when he was remanded to the prison.
Director of Prisons Dale Erskine said yesterday that he had received no reports of Sukdeo being injured while he was incarcerated.
However, he was aware that the inmate was ill and had been hospitalised.
