The move by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to limit the working years of its civilian workers to 60 has finally been embraced by the Guyana Labour Union (GLU).
Earlier this year, the GDF had engaged the move which had drawn the attention of the GLU which represents the workers.
The union had organised a meeting where the matter was discussed with a view to determining how the matter would have been addressed since a significant number of the workers would have automatically been placed on the breadline.
However, the GDF decided to stick to its decision.
GLU General Secretary, Carvil Duncan, in an invited comment yesterday, said that his labour union now supports the move by the military organisation.
Duncan said that the GDF was forced to engage the tactic in order to pave the way for fresh new ideas from young qualified persons and so help enrich its operations.
He disclosed that there were instances when aged persons, although they would have attained the age of retirement, would have been allowed to continue working thus depriving a younger individual of filling that capacity.
According to Duncan, it has been accepted by the union that Guyana has a young population thus it is unfair that the older generation be allowed to take up the majority of the posts available.
He further speculated that there are a number of young people who graduate from school each year and who are unable to find a job to exercise their knowledge, a situation which has the potential of forcing them into a life of crime or other wayward activities.
He pointed out that the youths of Guyana are needs-driven and without legal employment to satisfy their needs, they could create a dire problem for Guyana, a situation the GDF can aptly address by affording the youths employment.
