Elvis Rodriguez, 34, of 38 Russell Street, Charlestown, was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that the accused on September 15, last, at Robb Street, Georgetown, stole $90,000 from Boniaz Francis. Rodriguez pleaded not guilty to the charge.
When asked by the presiding Magistrate to explain himself, he told the court that he is a goldsmith and that he also works with John Fernandes.
He further explained to the court that on September 15 he was with Francis at the night club drinking, when Francis showed him the money. He said that was the last time he saw the money.
But Police Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews refuted this claim. He told the court that Francis did show Rodriguez the money and the defendant then snatched it and made good his escape. Francis is a French national.
Matthews further told the court that eyewitnesses could collaborate what he is saying. The Prosecutor said to the Magistrate that the accused had similar matters before the courts.
When the magistrate refused bail, Prosecutor Sherwin Matthews asked that the matter be given priority because Francis needs to return to his country.
The accused is expected to make his next court appearance on October 6, 2008.
Also appearing before the same magistrate was Gregory Howes, 38, of 233 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme.
It is alleged that the accused, on September 26, had in his possession eight grams of cannabis for the sole purpose of trafficking.
According to the prosecution, which was headed by police prosecutor Denise Griffith, the police were on patrol when they spotted Howes who was acting in a suspicious manner. The action by the accused caused the ranks to search his person and find the illicit substance.
The prosecutor said that the man was taken to the Brickdam Police Station and was subsequently charged.
Howes, in his defence, said he was taken out of a minibus and was told of the offence.
The defence did not oppose bail which was granted in the sum of $25,000.
The accused is expected to make his next court appearance on October 20.
