Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), Karan Singh, is urging residents in Agricola, East Bank Demerara, to pay their water bills and not to ‘interfere’ with staff from the water company.
Singh yesterday told members of the media that currently only a few residents in the community pay their water bills to GWI, while the majority just refuses to pay.
He explained that this problem is not only being experienced in Agricola, but in other communities as well, such as Buxton, East Coast Demerara.
Singh also revealed that staff from the water company would usually be attacked by residents of Agricola whenever they go into the area to do maintenance work or on their disconnection campaign.
The CEO said that within the next few weeks, GWI will commence a programme to upgrade the transmission lines of the Agricola area, with the aim of increasing the water pressure of the Agricola Well, so that residents can receive a better service.
Singh said that with this in mind, the residents should make it their civic duty and pay their rates to the water company since it will in turn assist GWI in improving the service to the Guyanese people.
“But we’re calling on everybody…They have a responsibility so we can’t take responsibility for the manager’s actions if they go and disconnect your water supply, because you know, you have to pay up your bills,” Singh noted.
Currently, some East Bank Demerara locations have not been receiving water for approximately five days now.
When questioned about this, the CEO said that this is due to some difficulties being experienced at the Agricola Well.
He explained that the water company will have to extract the pump from the well, repair it and that within the space of a day, the situation is expected to be back to normal.
