Ballistics experts are leaving no stone unturned to ascertain if the weapons from the Regent Street cache were used during the country’s five-year crime wave.
They have compared bullets fired from the Regent Street weapons with ammunition and spent shells used in the killing of former Minister of Agriculture Satyadeow Sawh, and the massacres at Lusignan, Bartica and Lindo Creek.
But an official said that the tests failed to establish any such link.
Several more tests are to be conducted on the firearms, particularly on the Intratech 9mm pistol, since the 9mm ammunition used by this firearm has turned up at more crime scenes than the ammunition used in the AK-47 assault rifle.
While the hierarchy of the Guyana Police Force has repeatedly linked the so-called ‘Fine Man’ Gang to the murder of Minister Sawh and the three massacres, police said that they were exploring the possibility that the Regent Street arms might have been loaned to the gang.
“Up to now we don’t know where they (the Rawlins Gang) were getting their guns from. Not all the weapons they were using were stolen from the army.”
The source pointed out that, while they never had any proof to this effect, police had received several reports that the Rawlins Gang sometimes operated as contract killers.
The investigators have so far confirmed that the recently-recovered AK- 47 assault rifle was not GDF property.
The army uses the Russian-made AK-47s, while the one found in Regent Street is of Chinese manufacture.
The serial numbers on all the weapons were filed off, making it virtually impossible to trace their origin.
Meanwhile, the three men for whom the police issued bulletins on Friday are still to present themselves for questioning in relation to the arms which were found during the Regent Street raid last Wednesday.
Police have issued bulletins for Joseph Aboud, called Trini; Frankie Ross and Clayton Hutson, who are believed linked to the arms find.
During the raid, members of the Joint Services unearthed an AK-47, an Intratec 9mm pistol and a Mosberg shotgun, along with over 700 rounds of ammunition of various calibre.
The weapons and ammunition were found in a barrel in an alleyway on Regent Street.
Three women who live in close proximity to where the arms cache was found were detained and have since been released.
