A spectacular strike one minute before full time off the boot of Troy Charles was the beginning of the end for 110 who eventually fell to Goedverwagting in the second semi-final of the Plaisance Inter-Block Football Competition which was played yesterday, at the Community Centre ground.
In the preceding game, the youthful Front Side unit easily disposed of Scheme 2-0 to set up a clash in the final with Goedverwagting.
On target for Front Side was Paul James in the 56th minute, while the skilful Jevon Gibson added another in the 69th. In an enthralling feature game that went wire to wire with intense action which spectators agreed was the best of the tournament, it took a 69th minute scorcher from Charles that beat 110 goalkeeper Mark Van Lewin to his left to set up penalty kicks and subsequent sudden death penalty kicks to decide the winner after both teams had ended the first segment 3-3 with two misses apiece.
It was then Troy Bunbury missed his attempt and Devon Agard made good of his that handed Goedverwagting a hard fought come from behind victory and a place in the final.
Earlier, the prolific Narku Durant gave 110 the ascendancy when he scored from a well executed lob over the head of the advancing Roger Justice just before the half. In the second period, Goedverwagting produced an extended period of offence and should have gained the equaliser, but it took the crossbar to deny Leon Lewis’ powerfully struck header that rebounded into play.
Seemingly content to protect their slim 1-0 lead, 110 went on the defensive and it required expert goalkeeping from Van Lewin to prevent the opposition from levelling the score.
However, the attack was relentless and a cross from the right flank reached an unmarked Charles and in one motion he banged in a terrific shot that left even the usually reliable Van Lewin no chance of saving as it was well placed to his left.
The final will be played on October 12, at the same venue.
