DEAR EDITOR,
Some time ago, I asked your columnist Freddie Kissoon to desist from referring to me in his column. He did for a while, but now it seems he is at it again. I am now accused of cheering the government in Guyana and, by insinuation, of visiting a website deemed racist by Kissoon.
Along with several other individuals, Kissoon also feels that my actions are “shameless, ethically indecent and morally repugnant”.
First let me flatly deny the two charges. I do not cheer any government. I live in Thailand and am not fully aware of things in Guyana. I read the newspapers sometimes and hear a lot of complaints from Africans and Indians about the government; I also hear a lot of praise. It sounds to me like any normal country, and certainly better in some respects than where I am now living.
In Thailand, the wife of the billionaire PM Thaksin Shinawatra is a fugitive from justice.
The whole family has recently taken up residence in the UK after Mrs. Shinawatra was sentenced to three years in prison. There are several warrants out for the arrest of the ex-PM himself. Another ex-PM, Mr. Samak, has only last week been given a two-year unsuspended jail sentence for defamation.
Also, for the past few months, thousands of people from the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) have occupied the road and compound of government house in their demand for a clean political system. Another major road outside the UN building has been blocked for several months. Also interesting is that the Army Chief, General Anupong, last month refused to enforce a state of emergency declared by the deposed Samak.
Finally, I have just finished running a two week training programme for a class of welders going to Australia to work on a one year contract. Having finished that, I am pretty much out of work and am currently in the job market. These things keep me busy. Not Guyana. And certainly not any Guyanese website.
So, how did Freddie Kissoon arrive at his string of insults and the audacious statement that I hold down a good job in a rich country? And this nasty propaganda was made while trying to find a way out from another of his flights of fancy: that Errol Arthur did not exist!
Isn’t this an abuse of the privilege that KN affords him? How much of this can be excused as just ‘opinion’? How wide is the margin between mistake, misinformation and slander here? Is KN bent of becoming a dignified gutter paper on account of Mr. Kissoon?
Before closing, I wish Freddie Kissoon would answer a few hard questions for the benefit of all his readers.
What was he doing in SCM bookshop on Bloor Street so often with his Big Coat? Did he know that SCM was a charitable bookshop run for the benefit of students? And, most of all, does he think that it is shameless, ‘ethically indecent and morally repugnant’ to steal books from SCM?
I look forward to your answer Mr. BC Kissoon.
Dr. Walter H. Persaud
