Taffin Khan played unbeaten in the intermediate category of the Trophy Stall/Oasis Café Junior Chess Tournament, held Saturday at the Oasis Too on South Road.
His toughest challenge came against Junior National Champion, Ronald Roberts, but with a pawn advantage, he was able to secure a win. Other juniors, such as Cecil Cox, Saeed Ali, and Khalid Gajraj proved to be no match for Khan as he steam rolled all of his opponents.
Junior National Champion, Ronald Roberts suffered two surprising losses in round five and six to Saeed Ali and Khalid Gajraj respectively and had to settle for fourth place. Second place went to the ever consistent Saeed Ali, while third went to Cecil Cox.
The final points standing: Taffin Khan-seven, Saeed Ali-six, Cecil Cox-four and a half, Ronald Roberts, Khalid Gajraj and Irshad Ishmael-four, Nicolas Stephney, Sheriffa Ali, Antonio Seenanan and Devendra Singh-three and a half, Judah Stephney, Stanley Ming Jr and Orin Stephney-three, Khalif Gobin-two and Amandeep Alves-one and a half.
After finishing third in the previous Oasis Café Junior Chess tournament, Athena Seenanan took the beginners title. Seenanan suffered her only loss to the youngest player of the tournament, Michael Phang, who is only seven years old.
Clive Bender playing in this first tournament took the second position, while Khalid Gobin took the third spot. The final points standing: Athena Seenanan-four, Clive Bender-three and a half, Khalid Gobin and Michael Phang-three, Hemchandra Sukhram-one and a half and Mikael Phang on one.
Prizes were given to the top three finishers in both categories. The Tournament was sponsored by The Trophy Stall of the Bourda Market and City Mall and the Oasis Café and Oasis Too.
