Armed robbery suspect Junior Ketwaroo, who escaped from police custody last Monday, was recaptured on Saturday night at a house in Grove, East Bank Demerara.
The circumstances under which he was caught are not clear, but unconfirmed reports state that he was in a taxi when he met up with a police road block.
Upon seeing the police, Ketwaroo reportedly exited the taxi and headed through a section of Grove. The car driver was told where to pick him up.
According to reports, the police got wind of what was happening, and, acting upon information, went to the house and arrested him.
He is likely to appear in court soon to answer a charge of escaping from lawful custody.
Ketwaroo, 18, of 419 Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, escaped while being transported in a police vehicle.
Another prisoner, Mark Mohamed, 26, also of Grove, was not so lucky and was recaptured minutes after he followed Ketwaroo.
This newspaper was reliably informed that, at about 18:00 hours last Monday, the two prisoners, who are wanted for questioning in relation to armed robbery on the East Bank of Demerara, were placed in the tray of a police vehicle.
As the vehicle reached the entrance to the Diamond Housing Scheme, it was forced to slow down because of the heavy traffic and crowd.
Seizing the opportunity, the two suspects jumped out of the vehicle, and, using the crowd as cover, ran away from the police.
Ranks gave chase, and Mohamed was arrested after he jumped into a nearby trench, sustaining a cut on his right foot, while Ketwaroo escaped into some nearby bushes.
Mohamed was taken to the Diamond Hospital, where he was treated and subsequently returned into police custody.
Another recaptured prisoner, robbery suspect Carlton Sampson, who escaped from the Golden Grove Police Station last week, was shot and recaptured at Craig, East Bank Demerara, on Friday.
The 27-year-old Sampson, also known as Mark Mohamed, of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, was wounded in the left hip, at around 10:00 hrs, during a confrontation with police ranks on a backdam.
Kaieteur News understands that police, acting on information, visited the area, where they found the fugitive hiding in a clump of bushes.
However, the circumstances that led to Sampson being shot are unclear, although the suspect alleges that he was beaten and then shot after being ordered to run.
The wounded man was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he remains under police guard.
On Thursday, Sampson bolted from the Golden Grove Police Station, after assaulting a police constable.
According to one report, Sampson was being escorted from the lockups to a washroom when he pushed the constable to the ground and sprinted out of the compound.
He reportedly fled to a bushy area in the vicinity of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara.
Sampson is a suspect in several armed robberies on the East Bank of Demerara.
