– hailed a successSome twelve (12) teachers representing the three (3) Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) Sports Districts in Berbice successfully completed the “Event Organisers” Workshop which was conducted from Tuesday to Thursday last at the Prison Officers Sports Club and the “All Saints” Primary School ground in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
This is the second Workshop conducted by German Sports Scientist Mr. Uwe Wenzel and unlike the one that was held in Georgetown, teachers in Berbice were taught to construct the equipment required for the Kids competition using discarded material such as plastic bottles, carton boxes, shovel stick, PVC pipe, mop stick, and car and bicycle tyres.
According to a release from the Organisers, the discarded materials were then painted in a variety of bright colours that added a spectacle to the competition.
For instance, the PVC pipe was used to construct the Javelins, the shovel sticks were used as Pole Vault poles, the carton boxes served as Hurdles and the like.
Following the formal Workshop, some 72 students between the ages of 7-10 years drawn from St. Aloysius, All Saints and St. Theresa’s Primary schools participated in a competition divided into 7 teams using 6 stations and the Endurance Run.
The final results of that competition saw Red Lions placing 1st with 37 points; 2nd was Green Parrots 30 points; 3rd was Pink Hibiscus on 28 points; 4th Blue Birds on 22 points; 5th Golden Eagles on 21 points and in the 6th position was Black Dragon with 12 points.
The release added that as was the case in Georgetown, all the students received certificates of participation, while teachers were certified as Event Organisers.
At the end of the programme, Mr. Wenzel donated the equipment to Ms. Cicely Crawford of the All Saints Primary School.
In an invited comment, the Head teacher of the All Saints Primary expressed support for the competition, adding that she was impressed with the equipment used which was from discarded items that are easily available.
She promised that an Inter-House competition would be held during next year’s Mashramani celebrations.
Meanwhile, President of the Athletics Association of Guyana Claude Blackmore has donated three trophies, one for each of the GTU Sports Districts of West Berbice, New Amsterdam and Corentyne. The schools selected to host the Kids Athletics Championships are Belladrum, All Saints and Eversham Primary Schools.
