Patriotic dogs! Horses playing musical chairs! Dogs nabbing trunkers in search and find exercises! Patrons can expect all this and much more when the Guyana Police Force presents Gymkhana at the Police Sports Complex Ground, Eve Leary, today, starting at 10:00hrs.
Coordinator of activities Assistant Commissioner, Cecil Bovell assured that the public will be treated to several classy displays from the mounted branch, the canine division as well as the traffic department, among others. The dogs particularly have been trained to retrieve the Golden Arrowhead from among several other flags and return same to his master. They will also be involved in stop and search exercises.
Trunkers beware! Police dogs have been trained to assist in the apprehension of your ilk. This is another of the displays that is expected to create some amount of interest.
Bovell disclosed that Gymkhana is held mainly to display the work of law enforcement officers, not only as crime fighters but as people who can create interest to attract communities closer to the Force. He said also that the main thrust of Gymkhana is to provide clean entertainment for Guyanese.
Gymkhana was a regular feature on the Guyanese entertainment calendar until, for inexplicable reasons, it became extinct. Youngsters between the ages of 12-15 may only have vague recollections of horses performing unimaginable tricks, well trained canines conforming to their master’s instructions or these very dogs leaping through hoops of fire.
The Guyana Police Force is once again providing the opportunity for Guyanese of all walks of life to witness some of these miraculous feats.
Patrons are promised a day filled with entertaining activities which also includes balloon bursting—a battle of the Mounties, daredevil tricks performed by members of the traffic department, tent pegging and vaulting.
The stop and search display should also provide immense entertainment and so too will the precision drills. There will also be a tug-o-war competition between Headquarters and ‘A’ Division while ‘B’ Division will oppose country divisions. At 15:45hrs there will be the beating of the retreat where the police band will engage in a choreography exercise.
Well, the stage is all set for an entertaining day. Musical horses! Patriotic dogs! What next, the dogs playing tug-o-war? The horses apprehending criminals? It all sounds far fetched but at the gymkhana, one never knows what to expect. You just have to be there to see for yourself.
