Robbery suspect Carlton Sampson, who escaped from the Golden Grove Police Station on Thursday, was shot and recaptured at Craig, East Bank Demerara yesterday.
The 27-year-old Sampson, also known as Mark Mohamed, of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, was wounded in the left hip, at around 10:00 hrs, during a confrontation with police ranks on a back dam.
Kaieteur News understands that police, acting on information, visited the area, where they found the fugitive hiding in a clump of bushes.
The circumstances that led to Sampson being shot are unclear, although the suspect alleged at the Georgetown Hospital that he was beaten and then shot after he was ordered to run.
The wounded man was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was treated and admitted under police guard.
Sampson is a suspect in several armed robberies and burglaries that were committed on the East Bank Demerara.
Kaieteur News understands that Sampson was recently picked out during an identification parade at Eve Leary.
On Thursday, Sampson bolted from the Golden Grove Police Station after assaulting a police constable.
According to one report, Sampson was being escorted from the lockups to a washroom when he pushed the constable to the ground and sprinted out of the compound.
He reportedly fled to a bushy area in the vicinity of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Junior Katwaroo, who escaped from police custody on Monday, is still at large.
Ketwaroo, of 419 Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, jumped from a police vehicle and sprinted to freedom while being taken to the Golden Grove Police Station.
